[The backdrop is definitely the organized interior of the Police Headquarters. McCrane, however, is standing in the open doorway, and the sound of a high-speed racecar can just be heard zooming away.]

This is McCrane, of the Brave Police. I am alive again, for those I have not had the chance to get in touch with yet.

[There were a few, and he felt badly. Especially since he was still coming to terms with having died.]

Blurr and I have encountered a Priority One situation. Overlord has...

[How can he explain this?]

...has been released by Megatronus Prime. Please exercise caution if you are outdoors. We will be attempting to rectify the situation.

[They already were, as Blurr was racing off to keep an eye on Overlord and talk to Megatronus while he made this announcement.]

We have also apprehended the murder suspect Pharma. Law Committee, I am awaiting further instructions on what course of action to take.

I feel turned around here, Drift. There is nothing that is a constant. Every move we make only barely returns us to normal, if that.

[He doesn't know what to plan for, anymore.]

Is there a better move to make? [Because he doesn't like it either, but it seemed the best possible chance.]

And of course they won't tell us. [A sigh. He wants to believe the First Forged are benign but it's really getting hard to believe.]

Maybe that's part of the test for us. We only grow stronger by being tested. We can't lose faith now in ourselves. Because ourselves are really all we have, isn't it?

[All right, the idea needs work. But he believes in it, unformed and raw as it is.]

[Drift, what did that even mean? McCrane is going to stare at you for a moment while he tries to decypher that new philosophy.]

We have to take each situation as it rises, and trust each other.

Keeping tabs on each other would also not hurt. [Since everyone has been dying or wandering to the badlands or showing up without Glyphs...]

I expect our plans will be exploited. They may also change. The best we can do right now is be ready for that.

Is it possible Overlord was freed to 'take care' of the glyphless? The First Forged had hinted they would take some action.

[Drift gives a sheepish shrug.] Could be better.

The important part is to protect the populace. If this goes against what the Firstforged want, I am prepared to take that risk.

[However, that possibility had not occurred to him.] Are there any Glyphless who would give the Firstforged problems?

[Dirge, at least, doesn't look very dead. That's better than nothing.] Would you be willing to do something for me?

If the First Forged don't value our existence, then they're not our allies.

[Said a bit grimly. He would hate that to happen, but he's not going to ignore the possibility.]

Rodimus might. [A bit of a grin, actually. Rodimus always was a bit fiesty, especially with authority.]

If there are Glyphless that could become a problem, that would make sense. We're going to need to confirm that theory, however.

I was hoping you could approach your own Firstforged about this. [It's the policey thing to do.]

War. [He sounds...weary.] Not every fight must be a war, McCrane. But we should know if they're not our allies so we know not to be betrayed.

It is their planet after all, and I am done with conquest.

It depends on how you define 'problem' The First Forged haven't seemed to find Overlord or Prism too 'problematic'. I can't imagine how Rodimus could be more of a threat than they are. [Sorry, ego of Rodimus.]

I'll...try. I think he thinks I'm a bit, well,....stupid.

If they continue to antagonize us, I don't believe the populace will remain calm. [Already, Gunmax is starting to chafe at the bit.]

But if they aren't threatened by Overlord, I agree. [He'd been exceedingly threatening.] Something else is happening, here.

[Wait. What, really?]

How could someone think that of you? [He's surprised by this. McCrane might be more optimistic than he lets on.]

No. They won't. Especially since some of these new arrivals, these unmarked, are our friends.

Which is why we need to be prepared. I've seen what happens when two factions go to war. Neither side wins, and no one can decide not to choose.

[Enough of that sort of depressing thought.]

They have their own priorities and honestly, I'm not sure they're all working toward the same ones. It could be that Megatronus is using Overlord as some sort of pawn, against us, the pawns of his brothers.

[Gods? No, he wouldn't believe they were gods if they were capable of that.]

[A shrug.] Only thing I really know is war. Not much of a broad-spectrum knowledge base.

Then we need to solve this, now. We need to talk to them, and come to an agreement that there are consequences for failing to uphold.

I do not want to experience war...

[He had an inkling of what it might do to him.]

You think they might be playing with us? Or with each other?

[It is as sound a theory as any, so far. He still doesn't like it.]

What consequences? McCrane they say things like this have happened before. They're still here, and...the Junk Pile. [And he's beginning to wonder what might be buried in there.]

War destroys everything. And we'd lose.

I think they might, with this, be using us as pawns against each other.

[A shrug.] All I know is how to survive. And even then just barely.

There are still things they fear. [They didn't go near the badlands, either, he'd seen.] But I don't know how to enforce something like that. As you say--we'd lose.

But...we still should try. To talk, I mean.

I don't think we're in control of anything they fear. If they're afraid of it, we should be too.

Of course. But one of them just let Overlord out. They have different motives than our interests. Or at least some of them do.

But I do not understand how they can show concern for us at times and contempt for us at others. There must be a pattern.

[It IS just like a crime. There's something to be investigated, here.]

There probably is a pattern. We need to figure out what it is.

I have heard them called gods, Drift. What would you have me say?

I don't know. Do 'gods' keep others? Like possessions? Toys? Not free and sentient creatures?

Perhaps they do. I can't imagine what it is like to be a god, but...

Do you know much about humans, Drift? You said you were in Japan for a time, but...did you get to see parents, while you were there?

I...suppose my hope is that the Firstforged are like them. They know what we do not, and there are some things they can tell us and some things they cannot. Not yet.

And there are some things we must experience for ourselves.

I don't know. But its the only analogy that fits with their patterns of behavior so far. [Unless there was something far more devious afoot.]

Yes, but I don't recall any 'parents' who would let someone like Overlord out of jail.

And what parents think is the for the best, isn't always.
