[001 | Video - Static Ahoy!]

[It had taken a moment or two..maybe it was three--he really couldn't say--but when everything had finally settled and he'd gotten most of his bearings back, realization hit him as he peered at the mark on his arm.

He'd seen that mark before. Primus it had been awhile but he'd had that mark on his arm before.

Pushing himself up, Smokescreen had tried to activate his navigation systems but nothing was working right and he had no idea how long it had been since he'd been here before. Looking around didn't really help with his problem, considering he was pretty sure he was in the middle of the Badlands.

Lucky, it seemed like his comms were still working, though they were full of static.

It was something though.]

--anyone c-c-copy?

This--Smokesc--n.

[Man he hoped someone would be able to understand this.]

Not sure--w-w-where I am. Badlands--? Navigation systems not---king.

--could use some help.

[Anyone? Someone?]

[That word hurts.]

[This whole conversation hurts. There's a reaching feeling of failure and... he can't shake it off. He should have tried harder. He should have searched...]

[When he arrives at the medical bay, he doesn't enter right away. He's still expecting this to be a joke.]

[So he lingers in the doorway, peering inside, far more hesitant than he's ever been before.]

[There's a moment. An awful, painful moment, in which he doesn't recognize the Autobot in the medical bay. The coloration is all wrong. That isn't Smokescreen. That's someone else. It was just a lie, then.]

[And right when he begins to withdraw...]

[The other Autobot is launching at him. The big tank actually staggers backward, trying to maintain his balance and, at the same time, catch the flying bot.]

[... because that action alone, that reaction, is nothing that could be faked.]

I--

It...

[For one of the first times, Perceptor finds himself speechless.]

... where have you been?

[It comes out softly, more softly than he intended it to. Rough and ragged and exhausted, suddenly.]

[He holds onto him, out of sheer reflex. What else is he going to do? Not... that he particularly minds. It's odd, how suddenly stability is achieved through physical contact.]

[Just a simple gesture.]

Home... but you'd vanished. You -- I looked.

[Everywhere.]

[He doesn't want to admit this. But... they're being honest now, aren't they?]

I'd... given up. Searching. General assumption was you'd vanished to the Badlands like the others...

[So he'd given up.]

It's... hardly your fault.

[He hadn't known who to blame. But Smokescreen... hadn't entered into the running. This place, maybe.]

[Perceptor isn't a touchy bot. Or, he wasn't, before all of this business happened. Something about this contact, however, makes him feel suddenly protective. As if he needs to offer somewhere to hide. How odd.]

I didn't blame you. I... still do not.

You've returned. It's more than I had ... more than I expected.

You... you were truly home, then? But you recalled everything that happened here?

[Which is hopeful, if nothing else. Maybe Magnus -- He stops himself from heading down that train of thought too quickly.]

[He looks back down, shifting his grip to rest his hands on the smaller Autobot's shoulders, instead.]

I can safely say things have not been the same since your disappearance...

[Perceptor speak for: I missed you too.]

You look very different...

[It's a lot flashier. He almost didn't recognize him, as a result.]

Provided you avoid unnecessary trips to the Badlands, and your medical scan comes back healthy... yes.

I suppose... they can.

[HE IS SO GLAD TO SEE YOU, KID 8( ]

So you went... flashier? Instead of less conspicuous.

[He doesn't want to crush the poor kid's dream but, seriously. This doesn't look at all helpful.]

[But he pats his shoulders, regardless.]

No. But not for any good reason. Grimlock destroyed it, in your absence.

More or less obliterated... I've been working to restore it, but.

[And there, he just looks tired. Shaking his head.]

But things have come up.

[Back to the way it was...]

[That's about when Perceptor does something wildly out of character for him. He stares at Smokescreen, silently, for a few moments.]

[And then just plain hugs the poor kid. Crushingly.]

[Sorry, Smokescreen. It's been rough.]

[And he never once felt anything other than guilt over losing you. But now you're back.]

[And maybe things really can go back to normal.]

...

You'd best never do such a thing again. Disappearing.

Good.

[He knows -- that it wasn't intentional. That Smokescreen means it. But even so, he can't really find it in him to loosen his grip just yet.]

[Smokescreen might have to be the one to do it.]

Madness, chaos, and wanton slaughter.

[All right then, they can just sort of stand here like this for a while, then.]

... much like home, really.
