Because I believe there are more ways to serve the war effort than simply blowing the enemy to dust.

Such as evacuating noncombatants and survivors to a safe location away from the conflict. Getting our forces out of the line of fire when it has become clear this fight is not going to be won.

Which was precisely what I was attempting to do, before being dragged here.

Optimus saw the use for my talents, outside of combat, and put me to work accordingly. He understood my reservations. There's nothing odd about it at all.
