[This isn't where he was supposed to be. He was on the roof just a second ago. Why... why is he in the temple now? It doesn't make any sense.]

[And then the feeling of loss sets in. Considering he can no longer recall the events leading up to, and including the fight with Overlord, he can only assume this loss is of memory itself. The most important thing he has...]

[... needless to say, when it finally occurs to him to grab the Link and make a call, he sounds utterly frantic.]

Someone -- please. I don't know what happened. I...

[He actually needs a moment to calm down enough to speak.]

... My memory is... there is something missing. I can feel -- I can feel it!

Please. Help.

[This is the most distressing thing in the world... at least until someone tells him he was dead a minute ago.]

[He's..he's here. The feed immediately cuts without so much as a warning as she sprints around the temple in search of the bot. He was huge--he couldn't be eluding her for long...

Oh, there he is...by the altar.

Her eyes widen as she sprints towards him...

And throwing her Link, right at his head. Hopefully it doesn't break as it clatters to the ground. As for what SHE does, she's up against his leg, sobbing her eyes out and pounding her fist into that smooth metal.]

You...left...me...!

[Each word was emphasized with a slam against that metal, broken up by hiccups and sniffling, her breath shuddering as she exhaled.]

[He's... startled to see her. Shouldn't she be back on the roof? In the 'nest'? How did she get here so fast?]

[He kneels as she approaches, more out of habit than anything, and is equally startled when she starts pounding on him. He tries to slip his hand in between her and his leg, to try and keep her from hurting herself.]

Kay... what are you...? Stop, you're going to get damaged.

I'm sorry. I don't -- I don't remember leaving you.

[No matter how hard she fights, that hand separates her from that leg. Still, the only way she can really work things out in her head is by pounding something. Or at least doing something physical. Her foot stamps hard on the ground as she looks up at Kagerou, eyes puffy and cheeks stained with tears.]

You left to go fight Overlord! You promised to come back...I have it right here!

[She fumbles around in that pouch behind her, pulling that notebook out and opening it up to the designated page.]

But...you died. I was...all alone.

[What's happened to her face? She looks awful... He almost moves to touch her cheek, but stops. He could just make it worse.]

[What she says... no, he doesn't -- none of it makes any sense.]

I... no. Perceptor told me not to go near him... why would I fight him...?

[It's her next words that make him go completely still, something in his AI twisting into knots. Who could -- how could she have known?]

... I... I know. McCrane told me... I... I asked him not to speak of it ever again -- Why did he tell you?

[As a sort of miniature distraction, she bends down and picks up her Link, holding it to her chest. She didn't want to relieve that part.]

He was killing Mr. Perceptor. Y-You went after him.

[But that last part--]

N-No! T..The other Perceptor told me. The really big one...

[His head jerks, like she's slapped him.]

Killing -- no! Where is --

[He can't even finish that sentence. Can't finish his thought. He starts shaking, and falls back, away from her. Nothing is making sense. Losing memories, losing a friend...]

[He can only stare at her, and shake. Please, Kay, start making sense.]

... I don't understand...

Y-You really don't remember...do you.

[She gives a sigh, starting to shiver as she tries to tell him. It's...pretty horrific to her still.]

It was our sleepover, do you remember that?

[He shakes his head, the motion jerky. His whole frame is, for lack of a better word, vibrating with tension and uncertainty and fear and...]

Y-yes. I do. I remember that.

[He says it with utter desperation, like he's latching onto the first thing he can understand since he woke up.]

It was during our sleepover that the call came in. O-Overlord...

He was killing Mr. Perceptor on camera. I...I couldn't watch. You went after him, and told me to wait there for you...that you'd come back.

I'm sorry, I broke that promise.

[Something that really seems to crush her.]

... Killing...? He's... Perceptor is...?

[And that just starts the shaking again. He's never actually... lost someone before. Granted, he was well acquainted with the thought of dying... but...]

I... where is he? Where--?

Kay, I don't remember any of this!

N-No! It's okay Mr. Kagerou. Mr. Perceptor is okay...I think.

[She...wasn't sure on it, to be honest.]

I-I don't know where he is.

It's been a week since it all happened...

You... you think? He has to be -- he's my friend. I...

[Don't mind him if he curls into a small ball of distraught ninja robot, Kay.]

A week. A week. I don't remember -- I don't remember a week...

[Oh Kagerou... She runs over to the robot, throwing those arms around his neck.]

I'm sorry Mr. Kagerou...I'm sorry...

I was so scared...

[It's times like this that he wishes he had the ability to cry. Something -- anything would be better than lying here, nearly paralyzed with overwhelming feelings... and being unable to let them go, short of screaming.]

I'm scared. I... I'm sorry.

[And he's back to repeating himself over and over again. Apologizing for something he can't even remember doing wrong.]

[Hearing that out of Kagerou...was scary. He was usually so strong...and here we was, a tangled mess of confusion, suffering minor amnesia.

So...it was her job to be strong for him. Those arms tighten around his neck, nuzzling into those cables as she tries to calm him down.]

It's okay...You're okay.

[He peels a hand from where it's wrapped around himself, curling it awkwardly around her. As much as he wants something to cling onto, to hold onto... she's helping. She's here, and real.]

[Something he hasn't forgotten.]

I'm sorry... I'm sorry I scared you. I don't... know what I did. But I'm sorry.

[When that hand goes around her, she places her on own it, rubbing it gently as she tries to comfort him. For all the anger she showed him previously, it had worn her out. She wanted nothing more than to hold him...to comfort him. He was scared, just as she had been when her father left her.

And she wouldn't put that loneliness on anyone. Her cheek presses against that metal, nuzzling into it.]

I-It's okay...I'll protect you next time. I promise. W...We'll protect each other.

[Weight, tactile contact, familiarity. It helps. It isn't who he desperately wants right now, but it's someone he knows, trusts. Someone... he cares for. It helps far more than she could know.]

[He curls his fingertips closer to her, even now remembering not to be rough with a human being.]

Yes.

Yes, all... all right.

I promise. I'm sorry, but ... I promise.

[She'd find a way. She'd find a way to defend herself from giants. To protect anyone close to her. She wasn't going to lose anyone ever again...not since her Dad...not since Kagerou.

She needed to be able to fight with him...for him.]

Good...It's a promise.

[She sinks slightly into that hand, closing her eyes. They burned slightly from all her crying...from the lack of sleep...]

I won't ever leave you again.

[Everyone was right. It's good someone came. That he isn't alone for this. He doesn't know if he could manage to be anything close to calm, if no one had come. But she's here now. She's promising something he needs to hear.]

[He draws his legs up, near his chest. Looking for all the world as if he was curling around the pair of them, instead of only himself.]

[... he wasn't made to be on his own, after all.]

I don't want you to.

Please.

[She accepts the gesture of being held, curling into him as he had curled up himself. She didn't want to leave...ever. And nothing could convince her otherwise.]

I love you, Kagerou...

[She pressed her face into that cabling almost sleepily, but she had to get that out.]

[He should leave -- he should have his processor scanned, checked for damage. But he can't bring himself to move, just yet. There is a safety here he hasn't felt since flying that day.]

[Then she says that.]

[Then she says that and something in his AI twists, strains. Like a hole trying to fill itself in.]

[No one has ever said that to him. Not once.]

... I won't... leave you.

[And he has no idea what to say in return. He just curls his fingers closer around her.]

[She notices the difference in grip, but doesn't care. It's contact. And it just proves Kagerou is alive. That he's back.

He came back for her... Not the way she thought...but he proved death wrong for her. Or that's what she'd like to think.]

You...you kept your promise.

[Her voice is slurry as she snuggles in more, wrapping herself in the heat emitted from him. It was comforting as she slowly started to drift off.]

[He lifts his chin, enough to accommodate her. He can't say he minds the contact. It's calming. It's real. Something to store in his memories.]

I tried to.

[Even if he doesn't remember making one to her.]

[Though, that's not really important, is it?]

[It isn't long before a sleeping girl is in his hand, as content as can be.

It was the best sleep she'd gotten since it all happened.]
