video || Trion's Lake

[Here we have the police bird in his natural habitat. Standing by the lake in Alpha Trion's sector. He looks rather pensive and generally more upset than he usually does.]

I --

[And before he can explain himself, he catches sight of his reflection in the lake. Scrawled on the panes of his left wing are the words "SPACE FOR RENT". On the other wing, in equally bold, obnoxious writing is "APRIL FOOLS".]

[He stares. And then drops the Link in an effort to scrub the writing off with his bare hands, twisting around into a veritable knot of unhappy ninja robot.]

[Unfortunately, all this does is give the viewer a good view of the back side of each wing, on which is written ""POWER JOE WAS HERE :D". One word per wing pane.]

[And it's then, in a fit of avian frustration, Kagerou has the most mature response to life there ever was. He lifts the nearest heavy rock and throws it, as hard as he can, shouting:]

I hate this place!

[He wishes, almost desperately, that he could hold her like he had when he was a human. All he can do now is cup his hands close around her.]

I thought... I thought dealing with Trion would let me keep them safe. Keep this from happening.

I couldn't save them. It's my fault.

[No matter what kind of embrace, she leans into it. It had the same reaction. It was security.]

Don't blame yourself, Kagerou. I mean, if the FirstForged can't even stop them...

Why can't they. Why can't they do anything...? Don't they know we need them?

[Speaking of...]

[He peers down at her in silence for a moment, and his expression abruptly twists.]

... Don't go.

Please. Please don't go.

M-Maybe it's not something they can control. I mean...if they didn't need us, why would they bring us back when we died, right?

[At those words, she freezes on the spot, and throws those arms around his chest.]

I won't. I promise.

No. Don't they know... we need those who matter to us? Our friends...?

[He doesn't speak for a minute or two, just holding her like that. Feeling her slight weight in his hands.]

I won't leave you either. I won't.

I won't let that place take you.

M...Maybe they can't stop it. Like we couldn't stop it...

[She wants to have faith in the FirstForged. Alpha Trion's been so nice to her...]

I'm not going anywhere. I'm not leaving my dad.

If they can bring back the dead, why can't they keep us from being lost?

[He's not going to let go of her until he has to -- wing doodles or no.]

... I'm not leaving my family.

We should ask Mr. Trion about that. Maybe he can answer it.

[But for now, she's settling herself into that cold armor.]

We're gonna stick together, you got that? Don't forget it. Ever.

... I. Yes. Yes, I could.

[He bends his head over her, shifting his wings as if to cover them both.]

I don't forget, Kay. Memories are precious.

[And Kay reaches up, using the crest on his chest as support, and pecks his chin.]

I won't. I'll never forget you.

[He can't say anything at this point, because the thought of her even remotely forgetting him is too distressing to process. If he focuses on that, he wonders if his AI might shut down altogether.]

[So he just keeps holding her, hunched around her, as if to keep both the girl and their memories of each other safe.]

[She can feel him hunch over her, and those eyes glitter up at him. He was so big, yet...fragile. And she wasn't going to just let him stay that way.]

C'mon you big softie. Let's get you cleaned up.

[Another peck on his cheek before leaning closer, her voice a whisper.]

I promise. Okay?

[If he would cry, he would be, right now. He needs her. He needs her almost as much as he needs Shadowmaru. If anything happened to her...]

[If he knew what the word "sick" meant, he would feel it at that thought.]

[He nods to her, air hissing through his cooling systems in a ragged "breath".]

I promise you. I promise you too.
