video || Trion's Lake

[Here we have the police bird in his natural habitat. Standing by the lake in Alpha Trion's sector. He looks rather pensive and generally more upset than he usually does.]

I --

[And before he can explain himself, he catches sight of his reflection in the lake. Scrawled on the panes of his left wing are the words "SPACE FOR RENT". On the other wing, in equally bold, obnoxious writing is "APRIL FOOLS".]

[He stares. And then drops the Link in an effort to scrub the writing off with his bare hands, twisting around into a veritable knot of unhappy ninja robot.]

[Unfortunately, all this does is give the viewer a good view of the back side of each wing, on which is written ""POWER JOE WAS HERE :D". One word per wing pane.]

[And it's then, in a fit of avian frustration, Kagerou has the most mature response to life there ever was. He lifts the nearest heavy rock and throws it, as hard as he can, shouting:]

I hate this place!

You don't know it won't come off. Scarves aren't made of metal.

... Then we'll just go home.

[He can't take her scarf like that. It's hers.]

But, we need to get that paint off, don't we?

[Now hold still, she's going to start climbing you.]

We can when we get home. I don't want to use your scarf for this.

Okay. I should have brought one. I totally forgot...

It's all right, Kay.

[He can't possibly be angry with her. Especially not over something so trivial. And yes, now that she's here... it really does seem trivial.]

C'mon, let's get you a towel then, so I can scrub this stuff off.

Just don't be too angry, okay? I don't think he really meant to be MEAN. Like I said...I've seen bad April Fools jokes. Like people blowing up garages and stuff.

[He nods, and starts back to the temple.]

It's uncalled for. I didn't do anything to him. I haven't done anything to anyone. I've only ever tried to protect them and...

They... leave.

...

[She falls silent. That last part worried her.]

Did...someone leave, Kagerou?

[He goes quiet too. He's not sure how to tell her... she'd been close too...]

Perceptor is gone.

[Something in his voice goes flat, pained.]

... And Soundwave.

[Perceptor was someone she never technically met, so her reaction to that was a consoling pat to the chestplate, eyes never leaving his.

But it's that last part.]

...No. That's...that's not true. Right? He's just busy...

[He stops walking, and bows his head. He didn't want to tell her. But she deserved to know.]

[And... keeping things secret from her just felt wrong. He's already keeping too many.]

I'm -- I'm sorry Kay.

[She's glad he told her, but at the same time, her heart sank.]

I..It's okay. He probably went home.

[She immediately curls up, as if losing all motor function right there.]

He wanted to. He missed everyone.

... Kay.

[He stops right then and there, curling his hands close around her, holding her to his chest.]

I'm sorry, Kay. I'm so sorry.

I couldn't keep him safe.

[She presses her face to him, burying it into that metal. Even now, after all these years, this didn't get easier.]

N-No...it's...it's not you.

It's my fault. I couldn't stop this the second time.

[He wishes, almost desperately, that he could hold her like he had when he was a human. All he can do now is cup his hands close around her.]

I thought... I thought dealing with Trion would let me keep them safe. Keep this from happening.

I couldn't save them. It's my fault.

[No matter what kind of embrace, she leans into it. It had the same reaction. It was security.]

Don't blame yourself, Kagerou. I mean, if the FirstForged can't even stop them...

Why can't they. Why can't they do anything...? Don't they know we need them?

[Speaking of...]

[He peers down at her in silence for a moment, and his expression abruptly twists.]

... Don't go.

Please. Please don't go.

M-Maybe it's not something they can control. I mean...if they didn't need us, why would they bring us back when we died, right?

[At those words, she freezes on the spot, and throws those arms around his chest.]

I won't. I promise.

No. Don't they know... we need those who matter to us? Our friends...?

[He doesn't speak for a minute or two, just holding her like that. Feeling her slight weight in his hands.]

I won't leave you either. I won't.

I won't let that place take you.

M...Maybe they can't stop it. Like we couldn't stop it...

[She wants to have faith in the FirstForged. Alpha Trion's been so nice to her...]

I'm not going anywhere. I'm not leaving my dad.

If they can bring back the dead, why can't they keep us from being lost?

[He's not going to let go of her until he has to -- wing doodles or no.]

... I'm not leaving my family.

We should ask Mr. Trion about that. Maybe he can answer it.

[But for now, she's settling herself into that cold armor.]

We're gonna stick together, you got that? Don't forget it. Ever.
