Because, if you really want your involvement to stay mostly unknown, going through the junk pile won't be a very obvious contribution. And while I don't mind helping you, this being your idea, I'm not going to do all of it alone.

If they were starving, they'd be in a lot more ill health than they are now, though, admittedly, a more secure and easier source of sustenance for them would probably help them a lot.

Further, if you want to look at it that way, you'd be depriving any organic around of any food you took from the junk pile for us to analyse.
